Recently, Joseph Odumodu, Director-General of the Standards Organization of Nigeria, stated that promoting the standardization of the cable industry is the first step for the domestic cable sector to align with international standards. The standardization drive has pushed investment in the cable manufacturing industry up to 20 billion Nigerian naira, equivalent to about 700 million yuan. Meanwhile, new manufacturing standards for domestically-produced cables in line with international norms are being implemented. Dr. Odumodu said, "Without advancing investment through cable industry standardization, the investment volume would not have exceeded 10 billion Nigerian naira, roughly 350 million yuan. It is evident that industrial standardization has boosted investor confidence. I am convinced that the future of Nigeria's cable industry will be brighter with the enforcement of new standards." It is reported that Nigeria's experience of attracting investment via cable industry standardization has been rapidly extended to cement, ceramics and steel industries, achieving remarkable results as well. According to Odumodu, over the past two years, close cooperation has been maintained with cable manufacturers to keep substandard cables off the market and replace those already in service, which has greatly boosted the application of qualified cable products. In addition, the standardization of the cable industry has created numerous local jobs, especially skilled technical positions.
